We’ve designed Sheffield Museums first post-lockdown exhibition, Cecil Beaton’s Bright Young Things

This week marks a change in many restrictions across the country, but something we’re particularly excited about is the reopening of our museums and galleries.

As Sheffield Museums opens its doors again to the public, we’ve had the privilege of designing their first post-lockdown exhibition at the Millennium Gallery, Cecil Beaton’s Bright Young Things.

In association with the National Portrait Gallery, Cecil Beaton’s Bright Young Things explores a deliriously eccentric, glamorous and joyful era of British cultural life during the 1920s and 30s through the lens of the renowned British photographer. The exhibition presents a dazzling leading cast of society figures, artists, writers and partygoers.

Our design work looked to capture the glamour, frivolity and playfulness of the era and offer a respite to the current doom and gloom, with an energetic and positive presentation of Beaton’s work.

The title graphic combines Cecil Beaton’s own signature with an ornate and decadent typeface that reflects the styles of the early 20th century. A bold pairing of pinks provides an attention grabbing palette for the exhibition and strong contrasting backdrop for Beaton’s distinct black and white photography.

Cecil Beaton’s Bright Young Things provides a rare opportunity to see his extraordinary works together on such a scale, as the pandemic sadly brought the original run at the National Portrait Gallery to a close after just one week.

The exhibition opens on Thursday 20th May and runs until 4 July. We can’t wait to be amongst the first through the doors.
